Weapons & Equipment

Tools

Use your nightstick, flashlight, road flares, and fire extinguisher safely and effectively on patrol.

Every department armoury carries a small set of tools for personal safety, visibility, traffic control, and minor fires. Select what suits your patrol, use each item for its intended purpose, and return to the armoury whenever you need to replenish a limited supply.

Nightstick

The nightstick is an impact weapon, not a general-purpose compliance tool. Consider it only during a close-range violent confrontation when verbal direction, distance, and lower force options are ineffective or unsafe.

Nightstick

Force option

Available from every department armoury for situations where close-range force is reasonable and proportionate.

Flashlight

Use the flashlight to search dark areas, inspect vehicles and evidence, and positively identify people or hazards before making a decision. Good visibility helps prevent mistaken-force incidents and makes movement safer for everyone on scene.

Flashlight

Utility

A standalone light for low-visibility patrol work. Use it instead of aiming a weapon-mounted light at something that has not been identified as a threat.

Road Flares

Road flares warn approaching traffic about a collision, road closure, disabled vehicle, or other obstruction. Place them far enough before the hazard to give drivers time to see the warning and slow down.

  • Park your patrol vehicle defensively and use emergency lighting before stepping into traffic
  • Build a clear, gradual approach to the hazard instead of clustering all flares beside it
  • Keep flares away from fuel, active fires, and anything else that may ignite
  • Remain aware of moving traffic while placing or retrieving scene equipment

Fire Extinguisher

The fire extinguisher is intended for a small, manageable fire when you have a clear escape route. Approach carefully, keep a safe distance, and direct the stream at the source of the fire rather than into the smoke above it.
