Open Role

Freely transfer across every department while permanently keeping the maximum rank and all unlocks.

Open Role is the ultimate reward of the progression system — the freedom to serve in any department you like, whenever you like, without ever giving up the rank and unlocks you've worked so hard for. This guide explains what it gives you, how to earn it, and how to use it responsibly.

What Is Open Role?

Open Role is tied to your character rather than your account. With it, you can freely transfer across any department at any time — the LSPD, LSSD, BCSO, and SAHP are all open to you.

Maximum Rank in Every Department

This is what sets Open Role apart. Normally, transferring resets you to Rank 1 in your new department. With Open Role, transferring no longer resets your rank at all — you permanently retain the maximum rank (Rank 8) in every department, along with all of the unlocks that come with it.

In other words, no matter which department you choose to serve in, you'll always have your full arsenal of uniforms, equipment, and vehicles at your disposal.

How to Unlock Open Role

Earning Open Role means proving yourself across three departments, reaching the top rank in each. Since every character starts in the LSPD, the path looks like this:

  1. Reach Rank 8 in the LSPD to become eligible to transfer.
  2. Transfer to either the LSSD or the BCSO, and climb to Rank 8 there.
  3. Progress forward to the SAHP, and reach Rank 8 there a final time.

On reaching Rank 8 within the SAHP, your character is automatically granted Open Role — the reward for having mastered every department. For the full details of how transfers work along the way, see the Department Transfers guide.

Transferring With Open Role

You change departments exactly the same way as before — through your Esc Pause MenuDepartment Transfers — but now you can do it freely, any time, without losing your rank. You'll also see a banner at the top of the page confirming that your character has Open Role privileges.

The 24-Hour Cooldown

To keep things fair, transferring with Open Role places you on a 24-hour cooldown before you're able to transfer to another department again. This prevents constant hopping between departments and encourages you to commit to your choices.
